Fall 2007 Update
The ABS Genetic Manager is a computerized mating program designed to allow breeders to quickly and easily make comprehensive mating decisions using all available information and your specific breeding objectives.
In addition to user's individual mating targets and criteria, the program utilizes Sire and Dam EPDs, ABS' Genetic Type Summary (GTS) data and pedigree information in the mating process.
Breeders can contrl the mating process and tailor Genetic Manager to their individual program in three ways.
- Mating Targets: This module allows you to establish targets or parameters that matings (or progeny) must fit within. When the targets are applied to individual cows, sires that produce matings that miss targets are not recommended by Genetic Manager.
- Bull Selection:In addition to serving as an electronic sire directory, the Bull Selection module functions much like the Angus Sire Sort program, allowing you to determine which bulls are eligible for the mating process.
- Cow Selection: In the Cow Selection Module, you can identify specific mating criteria for each female in addition to applying various mating targets.
Genetic Manager allows you to tailor mating indexes for each individual cow based on her specific strengths and weaknesses.
Within the Cow Selection module a screen displays the individual information for each cow including her pedigree and EPDs. As a quick reference to a cows strengths and weaknesses, EPDs that rank in the top 25% of the breed are displaye din green, while those in the bottom 25% are displayed in red.
Based on the animal's EPDs and phenotype, breeders can point and click to choose specific EPD and type trait criteria to compliment or improve each cow. In addition, different mating (or progeny) targets can be chosen for each female.
The Mating Profile screen pulls everything together.
It shows the top 5 sire recommendations and their index for each cow based on that cow's individual mating criteria and mating target. By simply clicking on each sires name, a full mating profile is displayed including...
- A three generation mating pedigree.
- Unofficial parent average EPDs for the mating.
- Projected Phenotype for the mating in graph format
You Make the Final Decisions
After viewing profiles for the recommended mating sires or any other bull of interest, you determine the final mating choices by moving bulls up or down the list or replacing recommended sires with other bulls from the database.
Finally, mating profiles can be printed for individual matings or groups of cows in addition to mating summary reports that list each cow, her first choice sire and the projected EPDs and GTS values for that mating.
