ABS Global<\/a> Australia has released a new expression for type graph, aimed to assist dairy farmers picking the right bull to add value to their herd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Production, longevity, and health data is helping dairy farmers understand what their cows should look like \u2013 if they want to stay profitable. And it turns out Australian dairy farmers are right \u2013 moderate stature cows pay the bills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a world first, ABS Australia has overhauled the way it expresses a bulls\u2019 Type \u2013 the observable characteristics of its offspring \u2013 rewarding those sires which breed functional, long lasting and profitable daughters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Focusing on the \u201cSweet Spot\u201d in a bulls genetic Type proof, this ABS strategy ensures dairy farmers are picking bulls that add value to their herd.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ABS Australia Sales Representative Alan Blum said Sweet Spot for functional type, is breeding for ideals and not the extremes will put an end to tall, unproductive cows with close rear teats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCows don\u2019t lie, their production, longevity and health data tell us that they are more profitable and live longer if they are moderate in stature, not tall or small.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you looked at current Type proofs, you would find bulls with extreme righthanded linear falsely interpreted as excellent when in fact their type has become undesirable and alternatively many highly desirable bulls falsely interpreted as negative for type. Australian dairy farmers should be able to easily select bulls for functional Type, not the flashy Type that HFAA prefer.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Western Victorian dairy farmer Pat Sloane has been breeding for long-lasting, healthy and profitable cows for the past decade. Not surprisingly, his Holstein herd is moderate in stature, strong, produce well, get in calf and convert feed well.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe like the black and whites, we find they are a bit tougher and when it is dry they have the capacity to eat more concentrate and grains or even silage and produce more in late lactation,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut we didn\u2019t want an overly big cow, we wanted to downsize, and we need them to get in calf and produce milk.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sweet Spot strategy has been developed to assist with commercial breeding objectives and will make sire selection easier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ABS \u201cSweet Spot\u201d has been included in the genetic information of 27 Holstein bulls in the latest ABS Australia catalogue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This easy-to-read bar graph lists the important linear traits but instead of scoring them according to a number, it ranks them from \u201cundesirable\u201d to \u201cideal\u201d depending on the effect these individual traits have on a cows\u2019 functionality, profit and longevity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This interpretation of the effect these traits have on the profitability of a herd makes it easier to select for functional type, according to ABS\u2019 Alan Blum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Sweet Spot Strategy is listening to the modern cows as they tell us what they should look like, then making a visual representation of what\u2019s good for a long lasting and profitable cow and what isn\u2019t,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve expressed it in a bar chart with \u2018ideal\u2019 on the right-hand side working back to undesirable on the left. Colours also help to make decisions easier.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
