{"id":11970,"date":"2024-04-08T02:10:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T02:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/au\/?p=11970"},"modified":"2025-11-13T04:57:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T04:57:10","slug":"genetics-in-polled-position-as-farmers-look-for-disbudding-alternatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/au\/genetics-in-polled-position-as-farmers-look-for-disbudding-alternatives\/","title":{"rendered":"Genetics in polled position as farmers look for  alternatives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No more horns- Australian dairy farmers invest in quality polled genetics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018DREAM BIG\u2019 with hot new big-milk Holstein that also ticks the \u2018type\u2019 box<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exciting new red bulls enter the Australian market<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jersey genetics deliver for Western Victorian breeders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Australian dairy farmers will soon have access to the most genetically diverse and high-quality polled Holstein bulls ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes as more dairy farmers are buying polled bulls as a way to improve animal welfare and decrease farm workloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ABS Australia now has 24 homozygous polled sires \u2013 those that guarantee progeny without horns \u2013 in the industry\u2019s Good Bulls Guide, including the highest BPI-ranked double-P polled sire ever,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/absbullsearch.absglobal.com\/details\/bull\/29HO21056\/D\/AUS\/HOLSTEIN\/EN\/GBR\/AUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DENOVO 4798 ESTATE PP<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At number two is the new Holstein polled outcross sire&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/absbullsearch.absglobal.com\/details\/bull\/29HO21450\/D\/AUS\/HOLSTEIN\/EN\/GBR\/AUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BOMAZ POMPEII PP<\/a>, 482 BPI, has also been added to Australia\u2019s offering delivering high for vital traits such as Calving Ease, Daughter Fertility, and Teat Length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ABS Australia Business Operations Manager Bruce Ronalds said there\u2019s stronger demand for homozygous \u2013 double-P polled \u2013 bulls than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy honing in on double-P bulls you can move horned animals to polled in only three generations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s compared to using single-P, heterozygous bulls, where there\u2019s still a fifty-fifty chance of breeding an animal with horns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New and diverse polled Holstein pedigrees have also made choosing polled genetics more attractive, while removing the need for disbudding horned calves is welcome on-farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMake no mistake, ABS has concentrated on breeding high quality, diverse double-P bulls, to meet farmer demand,\u201d Mr Ronalds said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis focus has involved strategic matings and even bringing horned bulls back into the polled pedigree to breed outcross double-P bulls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia\u2019s number one proven udder bull&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/absbullsearch.absglobal.com\/details\/bull\/94HO19526\/D\/AUS\/HOLSTEIN\/EN\/GBR\/AUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KINGS-RANSOM S DREAMBIG<\/a>&nbsp;is proving that high type and good production are possible from the same bull at 406 BPI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An outcross for many Australian Holstein breeders, he\u2019s known around the world for delivering high-producing cows with lots of fat and protein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Northern Victorian dairy farmers Brent and Kim Mitchell, Mitch Holsteins at Bamawm, have one milking DREAMBIG daughter and after using 100 doses, they have more to hit the dairy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are good balanced heifers with lots of width,\u201d Brent said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis means they are not too tall, have good deep-rib and really nice wide rumps. Unique high milk and high component bull,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/absbullsearch.absglobal.com\/details\/bull\/29HO19226\/D\/AUS\/HOLSTEIN\/EN\/GBR\/AUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DENOVO 15492 HUGO<\/a>, ranked number five, has graduated to proven sire status at 491 BPI. One of the few bulls with 40kg of protein, he\u2019s also 105 for Type and 106 for Udders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Red Holstein&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/absbullsearch.absglobal.com\/details\/bull\/29HO17459\/D\/AUS\/HOLSTEIN\/EN\/GBR\/AUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HOOGERHORST DG OH RUBELS RED<\/a>&nbsp;has maintained his place as Australia\u2019s number one proven Type Holstein after 12 months in this position. At 415 BPI, RUBELS is a farmer\u2019s favourite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose that are milking them love them,\u201d ABS Australia\u2019s Bruce Ronalds said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven those that normally just have black and whites, don\u2019t care that RUBELS is red, he\u2019s so elite within the breed, they want to keep using him regardless of his colour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/absbullsearch.absglobal.com\/details\/bull\/29HO18790\/D\/AUS\/HOLSTEIN\/EN\/GBR\/AUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PINE-TREE DURABLE-ET<\/a>&nbsp;at number 15, 425 BPI, is further proof of the consistency of ABS\u2019 bull line-up, with these long-time performers holding positions in Australia\u2019s ABV proven rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leading Jersey genetics&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Australia\u2019s favourite outcross Jersey bulls has added daughters to his Australian Breeding Value (ABV) proof and maintained his position as one of the breed\u2019s strongest production sires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/absbullsearch.absglobal.com\/details\/bull\/29JE4213\/D\/AUS\/JERSEY\/EN\/GB\/AUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forest Glen Craze TRIPP<\/a>&nbsp;continues to prove himself on-farm with strong production, breed-leading teat length, and great fertility, he\u2019s also cemented himself at number six on the ABV proven Jersey rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noorat, Victoria dairy farmers Con and Michelle Glennen, White Star Jerseys, are currently milking 37 TRIPP daughters and have another two \u201cbatches\u201d of TRIPP calves to enter their 400-cow herd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Glennen\u2019s originally selected TRIPP in their bull team because he\u2019s an outcross sire and his semen was available \u201csexed\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They kept using him because he delivered quality daughters that milk, stay in the herd, and are \u201cinvisible\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTRIPP is going to have quite the impression on our herd,\u201d Michelle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot since VALENTINO has a bull had so much influence here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Describing his daughters as \u201cwedgy\u201d, Con said TRIPP delivers the much-needed \u201cbody and teat length\u201d that the Jersey breed needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A TRIPP son \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/absbullsearch.absglobal.com\/details\/bull\/29JE4535\/D\/AUS\/JERSEY\/EN\/GBR\/AUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WHITE STAR TAVERN<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 bred by Con and Michelle has also hit the Australian Jersey genomic market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ranked 14 on the ABV genomic list WHITE STAR TAVERN is 372 BPI and a high production outcross TRIPP son, who is positive for daughter fertility, with high, wide rear udders and added teat length.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/11\/IMG_5054-group-Glennen.jpg.webp?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11972\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/11\/IMG_5054-group-Glennen.jpg.webp 2048w, https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/11\/IMG_5054-group-Glennen.jpg.webp?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/11\/IMG_5054-group-Glennen.jpg.webp?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/11\/IMG_5054-group-Glennen.jpg.webp?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/11\/IMG_5054-group-Glennen.jpg.webp?resize=1536,1024 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">TRIPP Daughters, Con and Michelle Glennen Noorat Vic<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/absbullsearch.absglobal.com\/details\/bull\/29JE4522\/D\/AUS\/JERSEY\/EN\/GBR\/AUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KAARMONA JERONIMO BRADY (CSCBRADY)<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 launched in January \u2013 remains Australia\u2019s highest-ranking Jersey genomic bull without any daughters at 435 BPI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A breed \u2018game-changer- he\u2019s big on milk, high on type, and has positive components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ABS Australia has already sold 1700 units of CSCBRADY and demand remains strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s exceeded all demand expectations and as a young bull, he\u2019s producing very well,\u201d ABS Australia\u2019s Bruce Ronalds explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s no wonder there\u2019s so much interest in him, he\u2019s elite for production at nearly 600 litres of milk, 41 kilograms of fat, and 36kg of protein.
