Beef Genetic Nucleus Internship

Overall Responsibilities:                               
The primary responsibility of this position is to support the elite beef genetics program and initiatives by coordinating and performing daily on-farm activities. General responsibilities include donor flow and synchronization, recipient herd reproductive performance, and bull performance test oversight, working closely with the ABS Global Beef Product Development team and farm ownership.  The position will be based at the donor and bull performance testing facility in Pardeeville, WI.

Specific accountabilities:

  • Regular monthly trips to the ABS Global headquarters in De Forest, WI.
  • Maintain defined welfare, biosecurity, and hygiene practices for all ABS cattle on site.
  • Support Reproductive management of resident, ABS-owned recipient herd, including:
    • Estrus synchronization, and heat detection
    • Coordination of embryo transfers
  • Support Herdsman in oversight of Bull Performance Testing, to include:
    • Assistance in all processing and data collection activities
    • Assistance in maintenance and daily observation of individual animal feed intake system
    • Supporting proper identification, data collection and maintenance of contemporary groups for an effective genetic evaluation
  • Support record keeping of animal ID, synchronization, heat detection, medical care, animal movements, pregnancy status and calving dates are to be maintained and accurate at all times, for all ABS animals.
  • Ensure high standards of livestock health and hygiene are maintained for all ABS cattle, by:
  • Daily observation of cattle
  • Feeding, bedding, facility hygiene and manure removal as needed to support farm staff
  • Low stress handing of, and a proper attitude toward animals at all times
  • Proper administration of all health and welfare related SOP
  • Ensure the image and service orientation of the department and ABS remains professional at all times.  To Include:
  • Maintain professional verbal and written communications with co-workers, internal and external customers, and vendors at all times.
  • Be flexible with respect to job responsibilities and hours and consistently strive to be an effective team member.
  • Display willingness to perform non-routine tasks as needed to ensure overall productivity is high.
  • Coordinate with ABS Global Product Development team, monthly meetings at the DeForest campus are expected.  More frequent planning meetings to be held on site.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Pursuit of Bachelors or Associates Degree in Animal Science or related field
  • Beef cattle handling experience gained through industry and/or farming/ranching experience
  • Good computer skills with specific knowledge of Microsoft Excel, and herd management software
  • Cattle reproduction knowledge or coursework
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
