Dairy Breeding Specialist, Production, UK
I’m Bill Foster and I’ve been with Genus ABS for 41 years, I started September 1979. I joined the Milk Marketing Board as a Graduate Trainee in 1979 (I was brought up on a dairy farm in Yorkshire and then completed a degree in Agriculture at Newcastle University). I then worked in the Marketing Department at the MMB Head Office at Thames Ditton in Surrey for 5 years. In 1986, I became a Livestock Officer, based at Sutton Bonington, Leicestershire. During the 1990s, I was responsible for sourcing Holstein embryos from the top herds in the US, to sell to UK farmers, which involved visiting and working with well-known herds such as Wilsondale, Regancrest and Markwell. Then, in the mid 1990s, I took on the role of sourcing bulls and semen for the Friesian and other specialist breeds. The demand for Friesian semen has grown over the past 20 years and Genus ABS is the World leader in providing Friesian semen for UK farmers and export.
I’ve been lucky to do a wide range of jobs over the years, with lots of interesting challenges, and have I’ve had very supportive bosses to work for. We have an excellent sales team and they are key to any success I’ve had at Genus.

Today, I’m a Dairy breeding specialist. Some days I’m visiting farms and other days I’m based at home doing office work – answering emails, preparing presentations, studying pedigrees online, I really enjoy visiting the farms to source bulls and inspect and photograph animals. I also enjoy working with the Breeding Advisers and Marketing Department, we have an excellent team spirit at Genus!
