{"id":10393,"date":"2026-04-15T10:17:05","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T15:17:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/uk\/?p=10393"},"modified":"2026-04-15T10:23:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T15:23:35","slug":"how-one-dairy-farm-is-using-genetics-to-improve-herd-performance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/uk\/how-one-dairy-farm-is-using-genetics-to-improve-herd-performance\/","title":{"rendered":"How one Cheshire dairy farm is using genetics and reproductive management to improve herd performance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A clear breeding strategy, long-term genetics partnership and a strong focus on fertility are helping one 450-cow Cheshire herd improve performance while keeping the system efficient and profitable.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based near Middlewich, PJ&nbsp;Williams &amp; Partners&nbsp;run an all-year-round calving herd supplying M\u00fcller, currently averaging&nbsp;<strong>9,500 litres at 4.4% fat and 3.6% protein<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The farm operates a&nbsp;60\/40 breeding split to beef and dairy, ensuring they produce enough replacement heifers while extracting maximum value from their beef cross calves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having worked with Genus ABS for over 40 years, including more than a decade with breeding advisor Trevor Stapelton, the farm has built a breeding strategy that continues to evolve with the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Farm facts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong>&nbsp;Middlewich, Cheshire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Herd size:<\/strong>&nbsp;450 cows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Calving pattern:<\/strong>&nbsp;All-year-round<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Milk contract:<\/strong>&nbsp;M\u00fcller<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Average yield:<\/strong>&nbsp;9,500 litres<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Milk solids:<\/strong>&nbsp;4.4% fat, 3.6% protein<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Breeding split:<\/strong>&nbsp;60% beef \/ 40% dairy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-breeding-strategy-that-adapts-with-the-system\"><strong>A breeding strategy that adapts with the system<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The farm\u2019s genetics strategy has changed over time to match system priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around eight years ago, the herd moved to a&nbsp;three-way crossbreeding programme&nbsp;using Norwegian Red, Montb\u00e9liarde and Holstein to improve strength and longevity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, more recently, the move to all-year-round housing has shifted their focus back towards Holstein genetics to drive higher milk production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Increasing yield remains a key objective, particularly as the business evaluates the longer-term possibility of&nbsp;installing robotic milking systems, which will also require greater use of&nbsp;robot-suitable Holstein sires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strong-gains-in-reproductive-performance\"><strong>Strong gains in reproductive performance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fertility has been a major area of progress on the farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The business has been using the Genus ABS&nbsp;<strong>Reproductive Management System (RMS)<\/strong>&nbsp;for around 11 years, helping bring greater structure and consistency to breeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, the family felt they were successful in getting their cows in calf, but not always able to keep up with the demand of reproduction across the whole herd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since adopting RMS, performance has improved significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, pregnancy rate was around 16%. Today, 12-month figures show:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pregnancy rate:<\/strong>&nbsp;31%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Conception rate:<\/strong>&nbsp;48%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Insemination rate:<\/strong>&nbsp;67%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-maximising-value-with-sexed-and-beef-genetics\"><strong>Maximising value with sexed and beef genetics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sexed semen plays a key role in producing high-quality replacements, with the herd using&nbsp;<strong>Sexcel\u00ae dairy semen<\/strong>&nbsp;for around seven years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lower performing animals that are not suitable for breeding replacements are used to generate additional value through beef genetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sexcel Male Beef<\/strong>&nbsp;is used on&nbsp;first- and second-lactation cows that are not genetically suitable for breeding replacements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The remaining animals are then served to&nbsp;<strong>NuEra conventional beef genetics.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sexcel Male Beef continues to have successful results across the herd. \u201cIt seems to be working well in terms on conception rates and getting male calves, and we haven\u2019t had any problems with calving ease, they pretty much calve themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-added-security-through-gamechanger\"><strong>Added security through Gamechanger<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"882\" height=\"588\" src=\"https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2026\/04\/image_157322.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10394\" style=\"width:502px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2026\/04\/image_157322.jpeg 882w, https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2026\/04\/image_157322.jpeg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2026\/04\/image_157322.jpeg?resize=768,512 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The herd has also been part of the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gamechangerfarming.com\">Gamechanger<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;programme for over three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, calves were sold via local markets.
