This Sire Summary was also met by U.S. and U.K. base changes as well as a formulation update to Net Merit (NM$), causing significant industry shifting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This blog breaks the day down into three areas: <strong>the actual base change, the importance of genetic diversity, and the performance of Genus ABS sires.<\/strong> Without further ado, let\u2019s dive in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-first-the-base-change-nbsp\"><strong>First: The Base Change<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The April 2025 Genetic Evaluation reflected a base change for both the U.S. and U.K. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/us-base-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A base change occurs in the U.S. every five years<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/uk\/the-annual-u-k-base-change-what-does-it-mean-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the U.K. base changes annually<\/a>. As a reminder, a base change is a recalibration of the population back to zero to <strong>account for genetic progress that has been made.<\/strong> Think of a base change as a report card for genetic progress.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, we communicated the base change estimates, and we are happy to announce that the actual total PTAs were higher than anticipated. The tables below outline the <a href=\"https:\/\/uscdcb.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">total change for the U.S.<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/ahdb.org.uk\/knowledge-library\/dairy-breeding-and-genetics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the U.K. base change<\/a> for the April 2025 Sire Summary. Here&#8217;s the impact the base change had on AHI:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For ABS-marketed Holstein sires (236 sires)<\/strong>, the average AHI change decreases slightly by 0.68 points, with a high correlation of 98.22% when compared to their December 2025 AHI values.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For all ABS sires (8305 sires)<\/strong>, the average AHI change is a minor decrease of 0.82 points, with an even stronger correlation of 99.19% to their December 2025 AHI values.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, these changes suggest that the genomic improvements are having a positive impact on health, resulting in only a slight change in AHI and indicating ongoing progress in improving health traits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-next-the-importance-of-genetic-diversity-nbsp\"><strong>Next: The Importance of Genetic Diversity<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some key players across the industry have relied on genetics that dominate the ranks, which results in a few sires drastically influencing genetic plans. While this strategy could lead to generating the next high-ranking sire, it\u2019s an approach that is more likely to increase the risk of future challenges for dairy producers that come with potential inbreeding. So, balancing both is imperative, which is why Genus ABS strives to offer <strong>a diverse lineup with genetic superiority.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is genetic diversity? In simple terms, genetic diversity is the<strong> number of different bloodlines <\/strong>used within a customer\u2019s herd or a genetics company\u2019s breeding program. It is determined by the <strong>number of different sires, maternal grandsires, and maternal great grandsires<\/strong> of bulls used in a breeding program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>Why Does the Diversity of Sires Used in Our Genetic Plan Matter?<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>It minimises the risk of any single sire reranking or dropping significantly.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>It maximises pregnancy production by lessening fertility influences.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>It reduces the potential of uncovering hidden haplotypes.]\u202f<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, it\u2019s important to be aware of the genetic diversity in your genetic plan as well as your genetic supplier\u2019s.
